Luxembourg and the garrison of the Elector of the Palatinate-Neoburg after the Rijswijk Peace (1697-1700)

Abstract
During the negotiations that led to the Peace of Rijswijk (1697), Elector John William of Palatinate-Neoburg tried by all means to have the Duchy of Luxembourg, lost in 1684, returned to the Spanish monarchy as a key territory for the defence of his patrimonial states. To this end, he offered the Spanish plenipotentiary, Francisco Bernardo de Quirós, to garrison the square with his troops and lobbied the Madrid court through his sister, Queen Mariana of Neoburg, and her confidante, the Baroness of Berlepsch, to obtain the government of the duchy for one of his wives.
